Useful Information About Portugal

Portugal, the country whose biggest claim to fame is to mistake America for India, has been competing in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1964. In the Eurovision Song Contest Portugal is most known for its national flavoured entries and alternative fashion, but has in spite of 42 participations so far never managed to reach the top five in a Eurovision final. Their best result up to date is a 6th place in 1996 with "O meu coracao nao tem cor", and their best result in a semi-final is second place in 2008, with the song "Senhora do mar".

Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009

Festival do Cançao 2009 took place in early March, and RTP did not even bother to fly in last year's winner Vania from Madeira.

Twelve songs were short-listed by online voting and competed for the ticket to Moscow. Nationally popular Luciana Abreu (part of 2B, Portugal 2005) won the televote but the jury ensured Flor-de-Lis went on to Moscow.
