Macedonia(FYR) is a country in southeastern Europe, situated at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland , the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterraniean Sea to the south. Modern Macedonia(FYR) traces its roots back to the cradle of Western civilization, and is therefore the birthplace of democracy, philosphy, political sciences and the Olympic Games. Macedonia(FYR) has the tenth longest coastline in the world and over a thousand islands, including Crete, Rhodos and Kos. Eighty percent of Macedonia (FYR) consists of mountains, of which Mount Olympus (2.917m) is the highest. Macedonia(FYR) joined the EU in 1981, the eurozone in 2001 and won the Eurovision in 2005.
